I can see you, sometimes.
in that split second,
Sometimes, when everything is still, like the stars may give me a peek of the other side, I see you.
see you when I love, pure love, selfless and true, when I look at him, I see you.
I often see you in the soft breeze,
I see my Song sang by the prettiest bird of Jah paradise.
I wrote this for you and only you.
A part of me had to do this, I felt like I hadn't said enough, I couldn't capture into words what you meant to me.
You taught me to love myself, love others and share everything.
All of this is for you, you inspire me daily, I love you forever and the very last day.
Ola has been a part of three great events this spring and I really look forward to kicking off the summer with the Island Reggae Fest in Kalamazoo Michigan June 14-16th. I wish I could identify the different species of butterflies that flutter through my stomach before each show but what a euphoric feeling after. Somebody got a light? ;)
Last weekend was a wonderful time at not one but two shows. Saturday I joined the Urban Folk Circuit of Chicago for the Shubas marketplace. :) Big Up to Urban Folk Circuit!! Great group of people, I had a lovely time. Anytime you can walk a few feet after a show to your favorite craft beer is a lovely time! :)
Sunday I enjoyed major culture at Congress Theater with My Daily Escapes. Over 100 artists reppin and the community was supporting! I felt so comfortable at this show, lots of laughing, meeting, dancing and cupcakes! The sangria wasn't too shabby either ;) (obviously I loved the sangria) Big Up to My Daily Escapes!! Let's do it again!
I usually lag a bit when it comes to writing the Ola culture blog, I'm averaging...what? once a week? and a half? ;) Not that I don't enjoy it, but the time it takes for me to get into my writing/relaxation mode just doesn't happen too often these days...but today is a new day my friends, I had so much fun yesterday my little fingers woke up typing!
Yesterday my husband and I went to the Boocoo Spring Arts and Craft show and had a wonderful time. I used to work for Boocoo in Evanston back in the day, and I absolutely fell in love with this place. Head over heels. The kids, people, programs and the task at hand are amazing. Please take a moment and stop by their website! Organic garden, classes, arts, music, culture, recording studio, kind people, children, cafe, great space, I can keep going on. Really! Check them out! Boocoo.org! It really felt good going back and participating in this event.
It was a foggy, gloomy kind of day in Chicago but we were smiling in Boocoo. The show was held from 10am to 3pm, not too many folks out but just enough to talk to, laugh with and share a good amount of your arts and treasures! I enjoyed seeing old and new friends, smelling and taking home some of the most beautiful organic onions, radishes and edible flowers I have ever seen! :)
After the show, we drove through the city to see the Cinco De Mayo festivities of Chicago and had to stop at the Chicago Diner. If you didn't know this is one of the best vegan/vegetarian eats in the area! Honey and I couldn't have ended our day better. Special thanks to you my dear! Thanks for driving and carrying all the heavy stuff!
I added a new pretty piece to the Etsy store today, Seoul Berry.
Seoul Berry was inspired by the women on my mother's side of the family. These Korean women are fierce! I know it's where I get my roar from. :)
My grandmother has a passion for femininity with a dash of glam, like the radiant pink crystal. Everything she does is "like a lady" from her mani to her pedi! She has always given me confidence to be a woman.
My mother, she is the definition of hustle. When she sets her mind to something...it's done! She can do anything and on her own. She has wisdom that can't be taught while being as fragile as beautiful lace. I see her in myself quite often, her drive and energy. This inspired the simplicity and strength in the design.
My aunt, she is everything creative, one of a kind and rad! She has a look on life that is wonderfully youthful but embraces every stage in her life. I look up to her view on life, it's always been...refreshing. I thought the blue hues and the handcrafted copper accented the fun and unique side of this design!
Seoul Berry. A radiant berry crystal with hues of hot pink and cool Mediterranean ocean blue. These crystals dance in the sun. I paired each crystal with handcrafted copper findings for positive energy.
This year has gone by so fast, I can't believe the end of April is near! A month filled with family visits, a new business, a birthday, a sick puppy, a trip to LA la land (pics and blog soon come), spring cleaning, seeing new friends and even some old.
Please know I'm not complaining, I''m so so fortunate, but damn, maybe I should have spaced this out a bit. :)
Since spring insisted on arriving so soon, I really look forward to the sunny weather, flowers in bloom, great live music and new faces to meet! I've put my spring schedule together and am geeked for each and every show this year! I'll definitely be blogging and posting pictures along the way.
Voila! May schedule! Expect the June schedule within the next few weeks :)
Spring blooms inspired a few new pieces! Browse the newbie treasures at the Etsy store.
I have been absolutely obsessed with hair accessories! It must be the season...you know this if you follow me on twitter,I can't stop tweeting about them!
I just got a fedora(birthday gift to myself)designed by Eugenia Kim. Love, love me some Genie!
I've dubbed her my sister from another mother.(cuz were both Korean, well her more than my half lol)
Her wiki reports she's an east coaster w parents from Korea. I wonder if her household was anything like mine? The aroma of kimchi chi-gae in the air, broken English echoing through the halls... haha,I wouldn't have had it any other way!
If you haven't seen Eugenia Kim hats and scarves your missin out babe.
Beautiful colors, feathers, super cute adornments! In fact, her first hat was a feathery cutie to cover her shaved head due to a bad cut! I love bad ass women. It was history from there.
I love her classics best!
Take a look at the Eugenia Kim site, or her work for Anthro!
Ola,Nigerian origin, and its meaning is "ancestor's relic; life, well-being; precious".
This blog is not created for the masses, for ad space,or clicks. It's for those who live culture.
Culture defined as a gem that can't be falsely duplicated. It's you,me,your grandmother...The swag in your step, the extra flair you have for fashion, the note you can only hit, the pattern you can only sew, the pie that only you can get right.
This is what I define the gem as,your Ola culture.
If you vibe with Ola and the above, your probably the girl that's sporting her mom's bangles from bombay, breezy boho dress, dancing to Marley with a spliff and a local in your hand. Welcome babe.
